Earth is under attack.

20 years after the American-Chinese war devastated our worlds, we finally have a tense peace. But legendary American Admiral Jack Mattis, on his inspection tour of the first joint American-Chinese space station, finds himself in the middle of the unthinkable an alien invasion.

Their ships are powerful, their weapons overwhelming. And in the confusion, our tentative peace with the Chinese is shaken to the core.

Taking command of his old battleship, The Midway, Admiral Mattis races the alien fleet to Earth, desperate to prevent the utter destruction of humanity's home. And in Earth's darkest hour, Mattis must unify and lead old adversaries to the fight against a common enemy, one that doesn't care about flags or borders. An enemy driven by malevolent hate and a thirst for blood. An enemy that cares for one thing only Earth's destruction.

The Last War Book 1 of The Last War Series eBook Peter Bostrom

I got into this book, and literally did not put it down for a couple days. Peter created a decent premise to what will have to be a larger work. One of the elements that I did like immensely was the hurry up and wait pacing with the star ship battles. I was also endeared to the fighter pilots right from their introduction, and actually looked forward to each chapter with them. In my opinion, some of the story was formulaic, however it is a formula I love to read and this did not disappoint. Without giving things away, the expectations were built on, and by the end mine were right on for what was revealed. Regardless, here's to waiting for the next one in the series.

The Last War Book 1 of The Last War Series eBook Peter Bostrom Reviews

A fragile peace between the superpowers is sealed with the joint operation of Friendship Station, strategically situated on the American-Sino border. The day of formal occupation of the huge space station was marred by an attack by alien craft. As the debris field marking the destruction of Friendship Station expanded on their viewscreens, Admiral Jack Mattis commanding the USS Midway and Captain Shou commanding the Chinese capital ship Fuqing faced off against the alien attackers. The action is constant, pulse-pounding, with realistic descriptions. The characters are detailed and believable.

This is a well written space opera guaranteed to be hard to break away from, leaving me anxiously awaiting the release of the next book in The Last War Series.
The storyline is engaging with a crusty indefatigable admiral, recalcitrant fighter jock, deceitful and power-hungry politician, and a technologically superior foe. Although predictable, the tension between Chinese and American forces is well-crafted with overtones for book 2. I did not enjoy the senator's vulgarity and profanity; however, it is brief. I appreciated that some of the physics of the future technology and space battles was acceptable. There were no lurid and gratuitous sex scenes to distract from the story. I look forward to book 2.
If you like military action store, you need to read this one. Admiral Mathis just happens to be in the right place at the right/wrong time. Of course, there are always bad guys mixed in and the tantalizing outcome leaves us with lots of questions, not all is explained. Enjoy - I did.
This is a quick read, lots of action, fighters and missiles and all zooming through space. Most of the characters are good, too, especially the fighter pilots. The higher-ups, not quite as much. The plot is intriguing enough that I'll look forward to the second book.
I went into this book with such high hopes. The premise sounded interesting enough. It is hard to come up with something completely new in this genre, but this sounded different enough. I like space opera, military sci-fi.

But the plot, characters and the writing couldn't make good on the promise. The battles that start of interesting enough just never change. Neither the author nor the character learn from what they may have done previously. The battle just get repetitive and boring. And the characters? None of them are likeable. And it is completely unbelievable that any of them could have made it to where they are in any military branch. They suck at their jobs. They are just bad humans. I just couldn't ever care about them or what happened to them. The admiral knows he is making dumb decisions. Yet he makes zero effort to make better ones, he just continues making dumb ones. The fighter pilot knows she is unstable and doesn't care about her gunner, other pilots, or the chain of command, but just blithely carries on. Way too much back talk to higher ups in the chain of command for any military, let alone one in a state of war.

Four more books in this? For me it is a hard pass on that.
First off, this is an ARC review however, you can see I ponied up the entry fee.
This is some good solid, hard hitting Science Fiction. The plot is tight and while it is not obvious what is around the turn, the author does refrain from continuously shaking everything up constantly. This series uses thematic elements that should be familiar to fans of Battlestar Galactica (The Ron Moore iteration) and The Expanse. Add to that a healthy seasoning of the humor and antics of Top Gun, and you get something new and interesting altogether.

As for the feel, take good old cold war intrigue and distrust, pair it with the constant adrenaline rush of the almost never ending naval combat from most Pacific Theater WWII films and you have somewhat of an idea of what to expect.

SHORT SPOILERS FOLLOW
This book simmers a little at first but, once it gets going, you don't want to stop. Buckle your seat belt when you get to the ending, because Kansas is going bye-bye.
All the ingredients necessary to begin an exciting new series. Heroes, young and old, shady politicians and politics, enemies who must find a way to cooperate and fight humanity's common enemy, and of course a mysterious new enemy whose motives are unknown. A good read in itself and a great beginning for a new series.
